hello guys,

i am wondering, how much is the performance difference between socket 754 and 939?

the reason i am asking is... i have a good agp video card that i still want to use and i dont have the funds for a new pci-e card.

some 754 boards still feature an agp while 939s dont.

need some guidance.

many thanks

Performance difference at what?

In general, the larger the datasets of your applications, the more cache misses you will get in accessing them, and the more pronounced will the RAM speed delta become.

Thus, general answer: The speed gain from choosing S939 over S754 is somewhere between zero and 100 percent. Generic applications and games are surprisingly close to zero.

There shouldn't be much difficulty in finding an S939 AGP board, at least not where I am. And then, there's still the (less than perfect, but still quite useful) PCIE-and-AGP board from ASRock. Migrator's joy ...

i was happy with an epox 939 i bought for a friend because it had an agp and pci-e.
i never overclocked with it, but the performance is plenty good enough

Note that the ASRock Dual939 is the only board that ACTUALLY has PCIE and true AGP. All (yes all!) others use pretend-AGP which is actually PCI. Card compatibility is very limited, and speed is SLOW.

Should be able to find an Nforce 3 AGP board easy enough such as

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813123222

or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813128286

or even the ASRock

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813157081

Which would be my pick so I could do PCIe cards in the future. Then again I’ve built a LOT of systems and this board doesn’t intimidate me at all.

really? you mean, all agp's of s939 mobos are really pci instead of true agp?

can anyone second that info?

thanks.

What he said was " the only board that ACTUALLY has PCIE and true AGP"
all the others that have both PCI-E & AGP don't have true AGP.

However, 939 boards with true AGP chipsets ( e.g. VIA H8T800, nF3, ULi 1689) of course have proper AGP

there is a board that supports PCI Express and AGP natively, I own one and treasure it, its called the ASRock 939 SATA 2, its a breath of fresh air and an incredibly innovative product, ocworkbench and other websites have awarded it as a stunning product

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/...39Dual-SATA2/16

back it up a bit to read more about it

i treasure it so much it never gets to go online because of the ongoing internet security threats that never go away

i play games on it, mainly good single player ones and sometimes other people might hook up with me and multiplay it on a LAN, great mobo
