Anyone know of any sercvices or drivers that effect video capture - i.e., make your system freeze when you're trying to do so?

that sounds like somthing overheating during capture
it usaly pegs the cpu to 100 % during capture increasing the temp to max

Moving to video cards, editing, and displays.

I don't think that's it. If I use Windows Movie Maker 2 - no problem. It's just every other program for capturing

Windows Movie Maker 2 is not considered a very good program. It does not produce quality high resolution. Because of this it does not tax your system's cpu as much as most decent capture cards. Video capture is cpu intensive.
1. What is your cpu speed?
2. What are you trying to accomplish?
Yes...driver conflicts can occur. And worse... system conflicts with other hardware and software can cause lock ups. Those are not fun to solve.

Not fun to solve - but fun having solved it I've been dealing with this for months. Anyway, seems it's a service called v2i protector - part of drive image, I think. As for taking me months to solve - should have looked in the event viewer long ago. Says v2i protector hung. Two questions:
1. Why can I find no other instance of this on the web? I'd assume there are other out there who capture video and have drive image on their machines.
2. Why does this only occur with non-windows capturing software?
Also, re: system resources, I used Movie Maker 2 to capture an hour long .avi. Wouldn't that take up the same resources as anyother program? It produces the same size file - looks the same as well to my untrained eyes.
Re: my cpu (is my sig not showing?), it's a 2500+ at stock speed.
Re: what I'm trying to accomplish, trying to capture video from my Canon zr70. Though I can use MM2 with no problem, it was driving me insane that I couldn't capture using any of the other, better programs I have - especially since I love my desktop and this problem meant somthing's wrong. I resorted to capturing on my T41 laptop - kinda ridiculous but it did work like a charm. I've considered it to be rather anemic, but i guess it's fairly robust for what it is. Anyway, I digress...

I capture from TV, VHS and other sources.
But I've never captured off of camcorder. Can't discuss the points about this program because it does not meet my needs.
Different programs use vastly different resources to accomplish the same thing. Sometimes - if they're written poorly - they'll use more resources but produce worse quality than some others that use less resources but produce better quality.
Gotta love programmers
Your cpu is definately hearty enough, so I would suppose other programs that you have tried are causing conflicts with something that is installed - hardware/software - on your PC.
It's a process of elimanation or rebuild if you're inclined to use something other than what works.
When I had (different type) problems, I opted for a rebuild.

Nope - but I have 6.5.
As I stated above, seems the v2i protector cause the problem - both with nero and ulead. I dissabled it and am good to go:-)
