Hey well i just posted a day ago about my TI 4200 crapping out, so i am looking to buy a new card under $300 that will play Half Life 2 and other games pretty good. I am looking at the ATI Radeon 9800 256mb 256bit off of new egg. I dunno if i would buy another Geforce again, and i hear that ATI's are better for the money.

As for the guy's question, the best choice is a GeForce 6800 128MB. You can pick up an eVGA one for around $280-$290.

I have a 9800 Pro 256 Bit 128 mb card I am using. I love it, for the money it is a real good deal right now also, can get one for around $200. If you want to spend $300 then by all means get either the new ATI x800 card or new NVIDIA 6800 card.

It might be worth just waiting a few weeks, scraping together a little more money and getting an x800 or 6800 gt. Thats what I done, wasnt impressed with the performance of a 9800 pro (was 128 bit POS) and it also started having problems in my PC so I have RMA'd it and secured myself a nice 6800GT. No idea what the difference will be but theyre $400 from newegg and pricewatch. And you get farcry with the eVGA's sell your old card on ebay, get some extra funds towards it

Best VALUE's a 128MB 9800 Pro. But best performance is the 12-pixelpipeline X800.

For $300 you will find neither a 6800GT nor an X800 Pro. A 6800 non-Ultra would not be a bad choice, though I am partial to ATI And yes you can mod the X800 Pro to an XT and smoke everything in its path, but an X800 Pro requires spending more than $300..
