Hi, this may be a silly question, but im uncertain: I searched around a bit but could not find a definitive answer. Are socket A fans compatible with socket 939? Thanks.

Some are, almost all are not.

The fans might be, but the heatsinks are usually not. The Zalman 7000 series is an exception. Totally different mounting system.

Any recommendations on a good, quiet heatsink for an Athlon 64?

Yep, this should really be in cases and cooling. Thermalright XP90, with nice panaflo fan will give great cooling with low noise. If you wanna spend more, the XP90C is copper and worth a couple of degrees C. The XP120, if it fits your board can be very quiet with a 120mm fan on it.

Thermaltake's Silent Boost K8 works very well on my 3500+ chip, also very quiet. No special mounting requirements, and you can slap just about any 80mm fan you prefer on it.

or combine a CoolMaster Hyper 48 heatsink (take fan off) and combine with a nice panaflo. That would be a good combo to.
